Soviet painter and teacher. People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR. Georgiy Stepanovich Melikhov was born on May 11 (24), 1908 in Kharkov. From 1935 to 1941 he studied at the Kharkov and Kiev Art Institutes in P.Volokidin, F.Krichevsky, S.Prokhorov, M.Sharonov, S.Grigoryev, K.Eleva. But his first teacher and mentor George Melikhov considered Mitrofan Semenovich Fedorov. Member of the Great Patriotic War. Marked with military awards. He took part in art exhibitions: All-Union – since 1939, republican – since 1945, foreign – since 1956. Member of the USSR Union of Artists. Worked in the field of easel painting. Master of realistic school. Major works: “Young Taras Shevchenko in the workshop of KP Bryullov” (1947), “AM Gorky in Ukraine” (1957), “Spring of 1945” (1960), “Delegates of the First Congress of the CP (b) of Ukraine in Moscow “(1969).
In 1948, Melikhov G.S. was awarded the Stalin Prize of the third degree. Honored Art Worker of the Ukrainian SSR since 1951.
From 1945 to 1961 he taught at the Kiev State Art Institute. Since 1948 – Associate Professor, since 1960 – as a professor. From 1956 to 1960 – Secretary of the Board of the Union of Artists of the USSR. People’s Artist of the Ukrainian SSR since 1967.
Melikhov G.S. – Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR since 1979. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Diploma of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. The artist died on April 22, 1985. He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovoye cemetery. In 2008, the National Art Museum of Ukraine hosted an exhibition of Georgy Stepanovich Melikhov dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his birth. Works G.S. Melikhov are represented in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, in numerous museum and private collections in Ukraine and abroad.
