Ukrainian Soviet artist, master of decorative art. Honored Artist of Ukraine. Lyudmila Nikolaevna Semykina was born on August 23, 1924 in Odessa. In 1947 she graduated from the Odessa Art College, and in 1953 – the Kiev State Art Institute, where she studied at A. Shovkunenko, K. Yeleva, V. Puzyrkova, T. Yablonskaya. The wife of the artist Baroyants Mikhail Sergeevich (1925-2006). Since 1953 she has participated in republican, all-Union and foreign art exhibitions. L.N. Semykina is a member of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR since 1958. Worked in the field of easel painting and graphics. “Sixty.” From 1960 to 1965 – the organizer and active participant of the Club of Creative Youth. In 1964, Lyudmila Semykina co-authored with Alla Gorskaya, Panas Zalivakha, Galina Sevruk and Galina Zubchenko created a stained-glass window “Taras Shevchenko” for the lobby of the main building of the University of Kiev, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the poet’s birth. The stained-glass window was destroyed by the university administration. The commission of the Union of Artists, convened after that, qualified it as “ideologically vicious”. In April 1964, the Plenum of the Board of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR excluded L. Semykina and A. Gorskaya from the Union of Artists. In January 1966 it was restored, but in June 1968 it was again expelled from the Artists’ Union for signing in March 1968 a letter of protest “139” addressed to Leonid Brezhnev, Alexei Kosygin and Nikolai Podgorny with a demand to stop the practice of illegal political trials. Was restored in the Union of Artists of Ukraine in 1988. Restored in the Union of Artists in 1988. Last decades she did not return to painting, she worked mainly as a costume designer (a series of dresses “Scythian steppe”, “Polesskaya legend”, “Prince age”, “Retro”, “Modern”). Master of decorative art. For the years of independence, Ukraine has created a collection of clothes “Skіfsky step”, “Polissya legend”, “Prince’s addition”, “Modern”, “High Castle”. The main works: – “Group portrait of the old Bolshevik-Arsenal”, “In the Odessa port”, “Winter evening”, “Twilight”, “After the tour” (1954) – “Windy day” (1957) – “Repair of the quay” (1960) – “Morning” (1961) – “The Legend of Kiev” (1966) – Costume sketches for the film “Zakhar Berkut” (1970-1971). The design of the metro station “Petrovka” in Kiev (1980) year). In 1996, a solo exhibition of L.N. Semykin. In 1997 she became a laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, and in 2000 – the V. Stus Prize. Honorary citizen of Kiev. In 2009 he was awarded the title of “Honored Artist of Ukraine”. The works of Lyudmila Nikolaevna Semykina are presented in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, in museum, gallery and private collections in Ukraine and abroad.
